What Prayer Is

Prayer is a sincere, sensible, affectionate pouring out of the heart or soul to God, through Christ [John 14:13,14], in the strength and assistance of the Holy Spirit [Romans 8:26], for such things as God hath promised, or according to the Word [1 John 5:14,15], for the good of the church, with submission, in faith, to the will of God [Hebrews 11:6].

Ten Key Principles and Promises from the Bible for Powerful and Effective Prayer

  1. The need for a clean and righteous heart - "If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened." Psalms 66:18.

  2. The need to pray according to the will of God - "This is the confidence we have in approaching god: that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us. And if we know that He hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we ask of Him." 1 John 5:14-15.

  3. The need to be led by the Holy Spirit and discerning the mind of Christ in prayer - "In the same way, the spirit help us in our weaknesses. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans which cannot express. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the
Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with the will of God." Romans 8:26-27.

  4. The need for agreement in prayer - "Again, I tell you that if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." Matthew 18:19-20

  5. The need for right relationships with others - "And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your heavenly Father in heaven may forgive your sins." Mark 11:25.

  6. The need for faith in prayer - "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believer that you have received it, and it will be yours." Mark 11:24.

  7. The need for persistence in prayer - "Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up." Luke 18:1-8.

  8. The need to pray in Jesus Name - "Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be full." John 16:24

  9. The need to overcome the weakness of the flesh in praying - "Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch an pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." Mark 14:37b-38.

  10. The need for fervency and conviction in prayer - "Elijah was a man like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops." James 5:17-18.

Prayer Power

Prayer is one of the profoundest tool that God has granted  unto us believers. It is the most effective weapon of the kingdom. He has ordained that it should be employed in any and every situation, from penning a letter to writing a book, from healing a cut to raising the dead, from the fall of a sparrow to the fall of an empire. There is no occasion too important for prayer and no circumstances too challenging for its application...
